After the loss of a spouse or life partner many take time off from work. In other cases, some prefer the distraction of work.


In either situation, you should be aware of your options. Talk with your human resources department about bereavement leave. If you don't qualify for paid leave, you may be able to take unpaid leave for up to 12 weeks through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
